International Day of Yoga- 2023

The Embassy of India in Denmark will organise a series of Yoga events across the Kingdom of Denmark to mark the 9th International Day of Yoga during June 15-21, 2023 under the theme ‘Global Ocean Ring’. The local yoga institutions, Indian cultural associations and followers of yoga will attend these events in large numbers in Copenhagen, Bornholm, Vejle, Aarhus, Aalborg, Herning, Nuuk (Greenland), and Tórshavn (Faroe Islands).

At the Annual Folkemoedet Festival in Bornholm, the Embassy will be organising International Day of Yoga events at booth C50 on 16 and 17 June. During hour-long yoga sessions, the yoga instructors trained in the Indian yoga tradition will demonstrate and guide yoga practitioners to perform yoga postures, breathing techniques and meditation. The flagship event of International Day of  Yoga 2023 will be held on 20 June, 2023 in front of the Royal Opera House, Copenhagen overlooking Amalienborg Palace and Marmorkirken (Marble Church) in which many dignitaries, diplomatic corps and yoga enthusiasts are likely to participate.  The International Day of  Yoga events in Nuuk, Greenland and 1st time in Faroe Island in Tórshavn are also planned on 19 and 21 June 2023. The local Indian associations have been partnering with Embassy to organise yoga events to celebrate the International Day of Yoga in Aarhus, Vejle, Aalborg and Herning.

In the run-up to the International Day of Yoga- 2023, the Embassy has also been organising a series of flash yoga demonstration events in Denmark highlighting the benefits of yoga.  

In a message sent to Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on the occasion of the International Day of Yoga in 2022, Prime Minister Modi had highlighted the importance of yoga in today’s context as an enhancer of physical, mental, spiritual and intellectual wellbeing. In this age of fast paced lifestyles and packed routines, yoga assures inner peace and tranquillity. Prime Minister Frederiksen, in response has offered her Government’s support in making the International Day of Yoga a success in Denmark and had noted that yoga plays an important role in the lives of people of Denmark, with around 9% of Danish population practising yoga regularly. 

On December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 69/131 declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. The declaration came after the call for the adoption of June 21 as the International Day of Yoga by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his address to the UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014. 

In the current context, yoga has been helping the entire humankind in their endeavours to achieve a sustainable lifestyle filled with health and mindfulness. It is in this spirit that since 2015, India and Denmark have been closely partnering to observe the International Day of Yoga every year, and taking the popularity of yoga across the length and breadth of Denmark.
